Overseas Manufacturing 101

Offshore manufacturing refers to relocating goods in production or assembly to another country. Firms typically do this because labor costs or raw materials are lower in other countries. Businesses may also relocate supporting processes such as accounting to another country. However, it is not easy for organizations to find overseas manufacturers that are reliable and efficient to provide them with on-time deliveries and high-quality products to sell.

Fortunately, there are several approaches a business can take to reach out to an ideal overseas manufacturer.

One option is to use specialized online resources for international trade, such as Alibaba or Global Sources. If you already know which country you want to manufacture and import from, you can contact the US Embassy in that country. You will then be able to request specific information for your needs. Depending on your industry, you can also consult an industry association for information on your options.

Another alternative is to attend international trade shows and network with other companies doing business abroad to connect with global manufacturers. A full-service patent marketing or consulting firm may be able to assist you as well. In addition to general internet searches with specific keywords on Google or Bing, you can search library publications and international directories.
